Dessie Hutchinson blasted Ballygunner’s critics after they swept to a record sixth Munster club SHC title at Éire Óg’s expense.
The Waterford star’s comments appeared to be aimed at Clare’s two-time All-Ireland SHC winning captain Anthony Daly, who suggested in a weekend newspaper column that the ‘Gunners best days were behind them.
“There was a certain Clare man saying we were a dying team this week, and little things like that give you so much motivation,” Hutchinson told TG4 after collecting the man-of-the-match award.
“I don’t know if it’s just trying to play us down or what, but that gives us huge motivation to go and perform. We were so hurt after last year (when they lost to Sarfields). We probably didn’t say it enough, but we were. So happy to get another Munster medal."
Next up for the 12 in-a-row Waterford kingpins is an All-Ireland semi-final against either Ballyhale Shamrocks or St Martin’s on December 21.
