"It's going to be a mad game of hurling!"

Former Limerick star Shane Dowling says he expects “a mad game of hurling” when the Treaty men meet Waterford in Sunday’s Munster SHC opener at Semple Stadium (2pm).

The game sees John Kiely’s men officially begin their quest for a fourth All-Ireland title in-a-row and, speaking on the RTE Sport GAA podcast this week, Dowling is expecting his opposite number Davy Fitzgerald “to bring something to the table totally different” this weekend.

"In fairness to Davy, if nothing else, he's an extremely deep thinker about the game. There's been so much talk about Barry Nash going up the field, how many people do you leave inside, man-marking etc etc,” he said.

"He's definitely going to come up with something. I don't know what it is - but I'll tell you one thing, if he continues the tactics that he used in the league, ie, that puck-out where the goalie sticks his hand in the air and they all run to the other side of the field and all that.

"If he continues doing the same stuff that he's been doing, he'd be foolish. It'd be stupid to think John Kiely won't have come up with a plan for the stuff that they've been doing.

"He needs to come up with something. He needs to bring something to the table totally different - and I think he's going to do that. If Limerick were playing Tipperary, Clare, Cork, anybody else, I would think Limerick were just going to win - and I still do think they're going to win - but I'm intrigued.
