Cork legend Jimmy Barry Murphy proved a popular choice for the RTE Sports Awards Hall of Fame last night.

The event, which Jacqui Hurley, Evanne Ní Chuilinn and Ruby Walsh hosted, was a celebration of a superb year for Irish sport.

The big winners at the star-studded event were Katie Taylor (Sportsperson of the Year) along with rowers Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy (Team of the Year) and Irish women’s soccer coach Vera Pauw (Manager of the Year).

On the GAA end, Jimmy Barry Murphy was honoured by being inducted into the RTE Sport Hall of Fame.

JBM won it all with club and county as both a player and manager, winning five senior hurling All-Irelands as well as an All-Ireland football title with the Rebels. He also holds 10 Munster SHC medals, two Munster SFCs and won four All-Ireland club crowns with St Finbarr’s - two in hurling and two in football – and altogether has 10 county senior medals.

Irish soccer legend Roy Keane featured in a clip on last night’s show describing him as a “brilliant sportsman” while Tipperary’s Nicky English was among those hailing the 68-year-old’s feats when speaking to RTE.
