Westmeath manager Joe Fortune was thrilled as his side secured a deserved draw against Wexford in the Leinster SHC at TEG Cusack Park yesterday.

On the back of a run of three successive defeats, the Lake County bounced back to shock the Slaneysiders and earn a share of the spoils in a thrilling contest with substitute Derek McNicholas netting a last-gasp goal for Fortune's charges.

They will be looking to build on that promising performance when they face Laois away next weekend.

"It’s a really special day for Westmeath people. You heard them there at the end, they really drove us on," the Wexford native said when speaking to RTÉ Sport afterwards.

"I can only commend the group. In the circle [speaking to his players at the full-time whistle] we said we have to go down to Laois in O’Moore Park next Saturday.

"Performances like this are great and it’s a special day for Westmeath people, but we need to go down to Laois and make sure we get a result there as well."
