Cork GAA icon Jimmy Barry Murphy is on the glory trail once again with his beloved St Finbarr’s.
Now 71, the legendary dual star is a selector with the Togher outfit’s senior football team who dethroned Castlehaven with a stunning 6-11 to 0-19 victory in Clonakilty last Sunday to qualify for a Cork PSFC semi-final against Ballincollig. The ‘Barr’s came up short at the same stage in the last two years and are hoping it will be a case of third time lucky.
“It means a lot because we have huge respect for Castlehaven,” JBM told The Echo.
“They’ve been great champions for the last two years. We’ve been on the receiving end of defeats from them.
“Scoring six goals is one of those freaky things that happens some days. I suppose the fact that Castlehaven are on the road quite a bit, maybe their legs were tired. It's hard going to win three-in-a-row, everyone knows that. So maybe we had the edge in hunger today.”
JBM is one of the most decorated players in the history of the GAA. With Cork, he won 10 Munster SHC medals, two Munster SFC medals, five All-Irelands in hurling and one in football, two National League medals in hurling and one in football, five hurling All-Stars and two football All-Stars. He also managed the Rebels to All-Ireland SHC glory in 1999.
At club level, he won six SHC medals, five SFC medals, three Munster SHC medals, two Munster SFC medals as well as two All-Ireland titles in both codes.
