Tyrone made it back-to-back Ulster minor football championship titles with a 2-16 to 1-12 victory over Derry in Letterkenny last night.

Conan Canavan – nephew of Tyrone great Peter – starred with 1-4 over the hour for the Red Hands while Logan O’Connor’s second-half goal helped seal the title for Gerard Donnelly’s lads.

Derry netted within two minutes of this decider through midfielder Conor O’Kane and pushed towards a 1-7 to 1-5 interval lead, with Canavan netting on 13 minutes, and the scores of Neil McDermott and Don Mulholland the difference between the sides at half-time.

Matthew J Daly’s two-pointer levelled the derby two minutes into the restart and Tyrone moved ahead through a Logan O’Connor point prior to pushing five clear and smashing to the Oak Leafers’ net with 15 minutes remaining.

McDermott and Canavan swapped frees after that and the scores of Conor Fyffe and Daly put a seal on the win which sees the holders now advance to the All-Ireland quarter-finals against Galway, while Derry also progress to the last eight.
