There were wins for Queen's University, St Mary's Belfast, UCD and DCU Dóchas Éireann as the 2023 Sigerson Cup got underway last night.

At the Dub, Queen's took the local bragging rights when they scored four late points to edge out Ulster University 1-12 to 1-11. Ryan Magill (UU) and Luke Donnelly (Queen's) traded third quarter goals before Conor Deegan's side finished in style with unanswered scores from Padraig Purcell, Peter McGrane, Diarmuid Baker and Fintan Canavan.

Conor McConville was in fine form as St Mary's Belfast won 0-14 to 0-8 away to SETU Carlow. The visitors dominated the second half after taking a slender 0-7 to 0-6 lead into the break.

Daire Cregg scored 1-5 as 34-time winners UCD defeated MTU Cork 2-11 to 0-13. David Garland scored the other goal in what was an impressive away showing by John Divilly's charges.

Meanwhile, DCU Dóchas Éireann were emphatic 4-15 to 1-7 winners over ATU Donegal. Paddy Christie's side never looked back after Conor Corbett and Rob Finnerty grabbed early goals. Finnerty scored another with Lorcan O'Dell raising the other green flag for the Dublin students. Keelan McGroddy scored a consolation for ATU Donegal.

The first round action continues tonight with ATU Sligo taking on MTU Kerry, holders University of Galway facing Maynooth University, UCC meeting UL and TU Dublin hosting ATU Galway.
