McQuillan set to blow final whistle on inter-county refereeing career

Saturday’s All-Ireland SFC semi-final between Kerry and Tyrone is likely to be Joe McQuillan’s last inter-county refereeing assignment.

The four-time All-Ireland SFC final referee from Cavan turns 50 this year, meaning he has to step down under the GAA’s age eligibility rule. And traditionally, All-Ireland semi-final referees aren’t considered for the final which would rule out both McQuillan and Down’s Paul Faloon, who takes charge of the other last-four tie between Donegal and Meath on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Mayo’s Liam Devenney has been appointed referee for Saturday’s Tailteann Cup final between Kildare and Limerick, while Laois’ Seamus Mulhare will handle the All-Ireland JFC final on Sunday.
