Shane Curran has vacated his post as Carlow senior football manager after last than a year in charge due to "player-related issues".

A mixed Allianz League campaign saw Carlow finishing fourth in the Division 4 table, having won three games, lost three and drawn one.

Roscommon native Curran took over the Barrowsiders last August, succeeding Niall Carew in the job, and his last game in charge was a one-point victory over London four days ago.

It means that Carlow are now looking for a new interim manager just a week-and-a-half out from their Leinster championship opener against Meath.

Carlow county board released the following statement last night confirming Curran’s departure.

"Shane Curran has informed Carlow GAA that he and his backroom team are stepping away from the management of the Carlow senior football team with immediate effect,” it read.

"This decision was based on player-related issues which he believed were beyond the scope of the management team.

"Carlow GAA are in the process of looking for an interim senior football manager for the championship season."
