GAA stadia on standby as Government signs off on Euro 2028 bid

The Irish Government will sign off today on a joint-bid for Ireland and the UK to host Euro 2028.
The FAI is hoping to host the world's second biggest international football tournament in six years' time along with Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland. With Turkey the only rival bid, hopes are high that the bid will be successful.
If so, it's expected that Croke Park - which would require some upgrade work - and the Aviva Stadium will host seven games between them. Casement Park in Belfast will also be used if it's redeveloped before then, while other GAA stadia such as Páirc Uí Chaoimh and Semple Stadium could be in the reckoning for what will be an expanded 32-team tournament.
It is believed that up to a quarter of all matches will be played on Irish soil.
