Mayo’s championship hopes have been dealt a huge blow with the news that top scorer Cillian O’Connor is to undergo an operation on an Achilles Tendon injury this week.
The Ballintubber sharp shooter’s participation in last Sunday’s league promotion play-off victory over Clare in Cusack Park was brought to a premature end just before half-time and a statement issued by Mayo GAA this morning reveals the true extent of the injury he suffered…
“Following last Sunday’s NFL game versus Clare GAA all injured players received first assessment with the Mayo medical team.
“Cillian O’Connor sustained an Achilles Tendon injury that will require a procedure this week.
“We wish him well and look forward to seeing him on the playing field again as soon as possible.”
James Horan’s men are scheduled to get the defence of their Connacht SFC title underway away to Sligo on Saturday week.
