Down football is mourning the passing of Richard Starkey, who won an All-Ireland SFC medal with the Mourne County in 1994.
The RGU Downpatrick clubman passed away on Saturday after an illness borne bravely. His Funeral Mass takes place today at 1pm in St Patrick’s Church, Downpatrick. Richard was an important part of the Down panel when they captured the Sam Maguire for a second time in three years at Dublin’s expense – his clubmate Conor Deegan started at midfield – and was a star player for Downpatrick during the same era.
“Everyone involved with Russell Gaelic Union is saddened to learn of the passing of Richard Starkey,” RGU Downpatrick posted online.
“A key player on the championship and league winning teams of the 90s, Richard was also a member of the Down All-Ireland winning panel of 1994. He went on to play for the Hoops for over a decade after the last SFC win and added IFC winners medal to his collection as well as being chosen as Player of the match in 2005 final.
“Upon retirement, Richard was soon at the helm of the club senior team along with his good friend Gerard Deegan and in this role he showed the same commitment and attention to detail as he did in his professional life as a well-respected Psychiatric Nurse.
“Richard was a proud dad as he saw older son Joe play for the Hoops and again latterly as youngest son Callum donned the Hoops jersey. Richard’s premature death leaves a large void in his family and the community.
“To his wife Donna, children Kristine, Joseph, Conor, Calum and Erin, and the wider Starkey family we extend our deepest sympathy.
“Suaimhneas síoraí ar a anam úasal.”
