Brendan Rogers has acknowledged that Chrissy McKaigue’s return to the Slaughtneil hurling fold is a major boost in their quest for back-to-back Ulster club SHC titles.

The 36-year-old former All-Star football defender scored two points to help the Robert Emmets to an emphatic provincial semi-final victory over Portaferry on Sunday after opting to focus solely on the big ball game last year.

"We were probably disappointed he couldn't tog out for us last year," fellow dual star Rogers told BBC Sport NI.

"The experience and leadership he showed today by winning primary ball, riding a couple of tough tackles and didn't complain - it's good to have those steely characters. He's a good presence to have."

He added: "It's been a while since we played our county final, so to get a win over a team like that who only played a couple of weeks ago is good."
