Aidan O’Shea helped Breaffy to a winning start in the Mayo SFC on Saturday, just eight days after his Kerry wedding.

The veteran county star married Kristin McKenzie Vass at Muckross Park Hotel outside Killarney last Friday week, but showed no ill-effects from the celebrations as Breaffy got the better of last year’s intermediate champions Kilmeena on a 1-13 to 0-12 scoreline.

It was a huge occasion for Kilmeena who were playing their first senior championship match in 118 years, but a goal from Davitt Neary early in the second half proved decisive in a game which also saw Matthew Ruane and Aidan Cunningham impress for Breaffy.

“Kilmeena were obviously coming here for their first ever senior championship game, so fair play to them,” O’Shea told Mayo GAA TV.

“I work with a lot of them, obviously I know Jack [Carney] well from the county setup. I knew they would be coming here as a young team with loads of energy.

“We're happy enough to get out with the win and get two points on the board. We've been building the last couple of weeks after the relegation play-off. Just happy to have two points on the board and looking forward to two weeks’ time against Ballintubber.

“(Married life) is grand, not too bad. A long week, but I'm delighted to be here to play today.”
