The stakes were high as Galway took on Armagh and Kerry faced Mayo on an unforgettable day at Croke Park.

For the first time in three years, GAA HQ was sold out for this mouth-watering All-Ireland SFC quarter-final double bill, which determined who will provide opposition to Derry and Dublin respectively in the last four.

First up, in a match for the ages, Connacht champions Galway - who beat Mayo, Leitrim and Roscommon on their way to collecting the JJ Nestor Cup - collided with the ever-improving Orchard County, who recovered from their Ulster quarter-final loss to Donegal by seeing off Sam Maguire Cup holders Tyrone before exacting revenge on the Tir Chonail men in another all-Ulster Qualifier.

The meeting of Kerry and Mayo wasn't quite as dramatic. The Kingdom had eased to an 83rd Munster title with effortless victories over Cork and Limerick, while Mayo put their first-round loss to the Tribesmen behind them by eliminating Monaghan and Kildare as they successfully navigated the back-door route to contest the All-Ireland series. But today proved a bridge too far for James Horan's team.
