Con O’Callaghan struck for 1-7 as Dublin came through a stiff test against Wicklow in Aughrim this afternoon to win by 2-21 to 0-18 and advance to the semi-finals of the Leinster senior football championship.

The hosts had led by 0-5 to 0-4 after 18 minutes before Niall Scully fired in the holders’ first goal and another from O’Callaghan’s rebounded penalty saw the capital men towards a 2-9 to 0-11 lead at the half.

Greg McEneaney and Tom Lahiff (two-pointer) shot over early second-half scores which stretched the lead for Dessie Farrell’s side and Colm Basquel would make it a nine-point game ahead of Patrick O’Keane landing a sorely needed point for Wicklow.

The points of Joe Prendergast and Darragh Fee looked to keep the pressure on the Dubs heading into the closing quarter, however two scores from O’Callaghan pushed the margin out to seven.

The home side never threw in the towel, with the excellent Dean Healy registering their 16th point with five minutes left on the clock, but Dublin would see out the game in impressive fashion with O’Callaghan and Paddy Small landing points ahead of an O’Callaghan two-pointer at the death.

The Leinster champions now progress to a provincial semi-final date with neighbours Meath in two weeks’ time.
