An inter-county football and hurling double-header will take place in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday to celebrate the life and sporting career of the late, great Teddy McCarthy.

The legendary dual star, who passed away unexpectedly in June, remains the only player to win All-Ireland senior medals in both codes in the same year as part of Cork’s double winning teams of 1990. Cork defeated Meath and Galway respectively in those finals and, fittingly, they will provide the opposition for the Rebels this weekend.

The day will begin with a function for Teddy's colleagues from the 1990 teams, who will also be introduced to the crowd at half-time in the respective games. Mini-games will include matches involving Glanmire ladies, Sarsfields and Passage underage teams as well as the North Mon first years.

The game against Meath will throw-in at 3pm, while the match against Galway will throw in at 5pm. Specially commissioned memorial trophies will be presented to the winners of each game.

Cork hurling great and friend of the McCarthy family, Tomás Mulcahy says: “Only Teddy McCarthy could bring inter-county action to Páirc Ui Chaoimh in December. We are very much looking forward to the day, as a fitting tribute to a man who gave his all for club and county.

"We would ask that fans, young and old, turn out next Saturday to show what Teddy meant to them. And we hope that fans around the country and around the world will watch the games on Rebels Online."
