Colm Murray RIP.

Westmeath GAA has led the tributes to rising football and hurling star Colm Murray, who lost his life in a road accident on Monday.

The 20-year-old was a passenger in a car which struck a parked car and wall while travelling on the R148 at Griffinstown between Mullingar and Kinnegad. The driver, a man also aged 20, was removed from the scene by ambulance to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar where his injuries are said to be non-life threatening.

Affectionately known as 'Rowley', Colm played football with Coralstown/Kinnegad and hurling with Raharney, and was a county minor footballer in 2019. He had a brilliant left foot and scored the last two points after coming on in Coralstown/Kinnegad's dramatic SFC victory over Garrycastle last summer.

Part of a talented group of players who enjoyed much success at underage level, Colm won an U19FC medal with Coralstown/Kinnegad and was also part of their JFC 'B' winning team last November. Poignantly, that was his last game in the red jersey.

Colm also won a SHC medal with Raharney as a substitute in 2021 and played in their IHC final loss to Ringtown last year.

In a statement Westmeath GAA said: ‘’All associated with Westmeath GAA are very saddened to learn of the passing of Colm Murray (20), who represented both Coralstown/Kinnegad (football) & Raharney (hurling).

"Colm was one of the most talented young footballers in the county and he played an important role for Coralstown/Kinnegad in last year's senior championship as he scored two late points to earn his side a win over Garrycastle.

‘’Colm was also involved in Coralstown/Kinnegad's last senior game to date in their championship quarter-final v Killucan. Colm played hurling with Raharney and was a part of the Intermediate squad that were defeated by Ringtown in the 2022 championship final.

"The fast attacker had also donned the maroon & white jersey with pride at underage level.

"All at Westmeath GAA send our thoughts and prayers to Colm's parents and sister, and to all his family, friends and teammates at this extremely heartbreaking time’’.

Colm is survived by his parents Eddie and Helen, and his sister Therese.
