'I'm sure the businesses in Tullamore will be cursing me'

John Maughan effectively apologised to the businesses of Tullamore following Offaly's Leinster SFC exit at the hands of Wexford yesterday.

The surprise defeat meant that the Faithful County missed out on the chance to host Dublin next Saturday evening, a game that would have provided a big boost to the local economy.

"That is a sickener for the town and business people of Tullamore as well," the Offaly manager said in an interview with Midland 103's Brian Gavin.

"Having a crack at the Dubs was the prize out of today and it is really disappointing. I am sure all those public houses, restaurants and hotels in Tullamore will be cursing me and the Offaly team, and understandably so."

While Maughan didn't use it as an excuse, Offaly's injury crisis was so bad that injured talisman Niall McNamee was sub-goalkeeper on the day because of Ian Duffy's torn groin and the GAA's rule that team managements are required to submit their panels on the Thursday morning before championship games.
