University of Limerick capped off a remarkable week by defeating Mary Immaculate College on a 4-31 to 3-21 scoreline at Croke Park last night to retain the Fitzgibbon Cup.

Having won the Sigerson Cup on Wednesday night, this star-studded UL side stormed to their college’s 10th Fitzgibbon Cup success with Tipperary ace Darragh McCarthy and Cork native Jack Leahy among those to the fore for them.

Goals from Jack O’Neill, Adam English and Leahy helped Brian Ryan’s lads to carry in a 3-13 to 0-13 lead at the break.

Mary I, who last won this competition two years ago, needed goals in the second-half against their Limerick rivals and would end up netting three of them after the change of ends.

Shane O’Brien, who top scored with 1-12 in this decider, fired in a penalty before Joe Ceasar and substitute Ben Currivan raised green flags for Jamie Wall’s side.

UL never looked like relinquishing their lead however, as 1-1 off the bench from Fintan Fitzgerald helped to put a seal on their sweet double success which marks the first time a side has won
