Gaoth Dobhair reached their second Donegal senior football championship final in three years after recording a 1-16 to 0-13 win against St Michael’s in Letterkenny this evening.
Having come up short at the semi-final stage over the past few seasons, St Michael’s put together a promising opening 25 minutes in this game which saw them sailing over three two-pointers via Michael Langan, Colin McFadden and Daniel McLaughlin to go 0-8 to 0-3 up.
However, Gaoth Dobhair mounted a strong finish to the opening period that saw points from Eoin De Burca and Fionnan Mac Ghiolla Choill being backed up by a Domhnall Mac Giolla Bhríde goal in injury-time as the sides went in all square at the break.
McLaughlin nudged St Michael’s in front again early in the restart and Edward O’Reilly doubled their lead prior to a De Burca sending over a point and then another from beyond the arc that gave Gaoth Dobhair the lead for the first time.
The 15-time champions would not look back after that as a hat-trick of Ethan Harkin points, along with scores from Odhran Mac Niallais and Niall Friel surged them clear and saw them winning out by half a dozen in the end as they now await the winners of Naomh Conaill and Four Masters (tomorrow, 4pm) in the Dr Maguire Cup decider.
