There was an early contender for game of the year at UPMC Nowlan Park yesterday where local rivals St Kieran’s College and Kilkenny CBS served up an epic Corn Uí Dhuill (Leinster Post Primary Schools Senior ‘A’ Hurling Championship) final.
A penalty shootout was needed to decide the outcome after the sides had finished level on 1-25 to 2-22 after extra-time. As it transpired, holders St Kieran’s prevailed 3-0 in the shootout thanks to successful strikes from Jake Mullen, Noah Manogue and Cian Phelan.
It was a cruel way for Kilkenny CBS to lose out after they had contributed to a superb contest. Patrick Lacey certainly didn’t deserve to finish on the losing side after firing 1-12, but St Kieran’s found a way to win their 58th Leinster title with free-taker Noah Manogue helping himself to 0-13.
While St Kieran’s go straight into an All-Ireland semi-final, Kilkenny CBS will have another chance in a quarter-final against the losers of the Connacht final in two weeks’ time.
