IT Carlow and UL are safely through to the last four of the Fitzgibbon Cup.

Managed by Kilkenny legend DJ Carey, IT Carlow dethroned 2020 champions UCC with a 1-17 to 0-14 win in their home grounds.

A Rory Higgins goal helped the winners to a 1-11 to 0-8 half-time lead. The first half also saw both sides reduced to 14 players following the dismissals of UCC's Padraig Power and IT Carlow's Jerry Kelly. The hosts remained on the front-foot after the restart when Carlow’s Chris Nolan, Wexford’s Seamus Casey and Kilkenny’s Cian Kenny drove them to victory.

IT Carlow's victory was all the more noteworthy after they lost sharpshooter Marty Kavanagh to an early injury, while Eoin Cody was unavailable due to his All-Ireland club commitments with Ballyhale Shamrocks

In last night's other quarter-final, early goals from Mikey Kiely and Mark Rodgers paved the way for UL's 2-22 to 1-19 defeat of MTU Cork.

With Niall Brennan also to the fore, UL took a 2-11 to 0-9 advantage into the interval. They extended their lead after the restart before a Declan Hanlon goal gave the visitors hope. But eight points from Gearoid O'Connor ultimately proved decisive for the Limerick students.

In today's quarter-finals, GMIT welcome TUS Midwest to Carnmore at 2pm and NUIG host WIT up the road in Dangan at 7pm.
