A bird of prey has been rescued after it became entangled in ball-stopping nets at a Kilkenny GAA club.

Local Gardaí assisted in freeing the buzzard which was caught in the nets behind one of the goals at the James Stephens grounds last Sunday night. Kildare Wildlife Rescue – who nursed the injured seagull that spent nearly 25 minutes on the Croke Park pitch during this year’s All-Ireland SFC final back to full health – were also drafted in to help with the rescue operation.

"This required prompt action and all agencies got into gear including the KSPCA, Fire Service and of course Kildare Wildlife Rescue," An Garda Síochana Kilkenny posted on Facebook.

"You'll be delighted to know that our feathered friend was rescued and is now about to begin a new life in the Garden County (Wicklow). No more hurling for this chick!”
