Vinny Corey has stepped down as Monaghan senior football manager after two years in charge.

The surprise news comes just 13 months after Corey led the Farney County to an All-Ireland SFC semi-final against Dublin. This year, however, wasn't as successful. After suffering relegation from Division 1 of the Allianz League, Monaghan were knocked out of the Ulster SFC by Cavan before eventually losing to Galway in the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final after drawing with Louth and beating Meath in the group stage.

The former county star, who had previously served as a selector under his predecessor Seamus McEnaney, is the second inter-county football managerial departure in a matter of days, with Dessie Dolan having also stepped down in Westmeath.

"Monaghan GAA would like to express its sincere appreciation to Vinny for his unwavering service to Monaghan GAA over the last 22 years, 18 as a player, 2 as a selector and 2 years at the helm as senior manager," a county board statement read.

"We are very thankful for Vinny's outstanding support and commitment to Monaghan GAA over the years and appreciate his contributions made as player, selector & manager.

"Monaghan GAA fully respects Vinny's decision to step down and wishes him continued success in future endeavours."
