Longford into Leinster U20FC semis as Westmeath-Kildare clash abandoned at half-time

Longford edged a hard-fought 3-13 to 1-17 win against Offaly last night (Wednesday) in Newtownforbes to move into the semi-finals of the Leinster U20 football championship against holders Louth.

After having fallen 0-5 to 0-2 behind inside the opening quarter, the home side drew level thank to Max Gallagher’s goal and went ahead when Jamie Dorr raised a white flag.

Offaly responded with a goal of their own via Dylan Dunne, but their opponents surged ahead again after Cormac Flynn hit the net and a two-pointer by Luke Donnelly, along with a James Hagan point would see them go in at the break with a 2-7 to 1-9 advantage.

Eoin Rouse levelled for the Faithful lads early in the restart and Cian McNamee put them ahead, but it was the Midlanders that kicked on from there as Flynn, Paddy Mollahan, Donnelly and Kevin Baskett all registered points ahead of Mollahan hammering in their third goal on 57 minutes.

Goalkeeper Jack Ryan pulled back a two-pointer for Offaly ahead of Cian O’Donnell and Kaelem Bryan (free) cancelling out each other’s points in injury-time.

Meanwhile, the night’s other Leinster U20FC quarter-final clash between Westmeath and Kildare was abandoned at half-time due to the bad weather conditions.

Kildare were leading by 0-6 to 0-3 in Kinnegad when the decision was taken by referee Ian Howley to call off the game in the interest of player safety.

Leinster GAA have yet to confirm details for the re-fixture.
