Former Derry U20 goalkeeper Jack Scullion has been awarded a scholarship to play American football with Rutgers University in New Jersey.
The Lavey clubman will succeed Jude McAtamney as a kicker after his fellow county man recently signed for NFL outfit the New York Giants. Scullion will study quantity surveying alongside his playing duties for the Scarlet Knights.
Scullion was called up to the Derry senior squad during Rory Gallagher’s tenure, but has now opted to pursue a career in American football after impressing kicking coach Tadhg Leader, who was instrumental in Down U20 goalkeeper Charlie Smyth signing a contract with the New Orleans Saints earlier this year.
“I want to say a massive thank you to Tadhg Leader of Leader Kicking for the time and effort he has put in since I started. He’s an absolute gentleman. This man changes lives! I would strongly recommend any young lad to give this a go,” Scullion said on Instagram.
