Kevin McStay has been unveiled as Mayo's new senior football manager.

The 60-year-old former All-Star saw off strong competition from Ray Dempsey Declan Shaw and Mike Solan to succeed James Horan in the role. McStay, who has been handed a four-year term, has assembled an impressive backroom team which comprises former Mayo manager Stephen Rochford, former Mayo coach Donie Buckley, Liam McHale and ex-Belmullet boss Damien Mulligan.

Former Ballina and Mayo team-mate McHale was McStay's right-hand man when he managed Roscommon to a Connacht SFC title in 2017. They also guided St Brigid's to All-Ireland club glory in 2013. It was a case of third time lucky for McStay who was previously overlooked for the job in 1995 and 2015.

Speaking to www.mayogaa.com after his ratification, Kevin McStay said it was a dream come true to have finally been given the chance to manage his home county.

“It was always a desire of mine to return someday to manage the Mayo senior sootball team and I am very grateful to have been given this opportunity now," he commented.

"I am looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead and I will leave no stone unturned in my efforts to keep Mayo competitive and challenging for national honours."

Mayo GAA chairman Seamus Tuohy said: “I want to thank all the candidates that put their name forward for the position of Mayo senior football manager. It was an arduous process but we are confident we have chosen the best person for the job.

"Kevin has a proven track record with both Roscommon and St. Brigid’s GAA club and he brings a wealth of experience to the position."
