New York are Nickey Rackard Cup champions after a 2-22 to 2-17 win over Tyrone at Croke Park this afternoon.
Having captured the Lory Meagher Cup 12 months ago in their maiden year in the competition, Richie Hartnett’s side clinched more silverware at headquarters with goals from AJ Willis and Cian Barron helping them over the line in promotion to the Christy Ring Cup for 2027.
The Exiles were 0-6 to 0-5 in front when they conceded the game’s first goal via a Ciaran Magill penalty on 14 minutes, with an Aidy Kelly ‘65’ putting three between the sides two minutes later.
Thomas Douglas (0-8) and Bill Maher pulled back points for the victors ahead of Willis hammering to the Red Hands’ net and points by Barron, former Galway star Johnny Glynn and Douglas (free) would see the scoreboard reading 1-14 to 1-10 in their side’s favour at the half.
Douglas helped push New York six clear after the change of ends, with scores from Niall Garel (free), Shea Munrone and Michael Little (free) halving the Tyrone deficit, but Hartnett’s men would widen the gap again and then crash in a Barron goal in the 62nd minute which saw them with one hand on the trophy.
Three David Mangan frees down the home stretch would seal the deal for New York who’ll now head back across the Atlantic with the silverware.
