Dolan set to take Longford reins

Frankie Dolan is in line to take charge of the Longford senior footballers after his Abbeylara side exited the Connolly Cup race at the weekend.

Abbeylara suffered a 0-12 to 1-21 semi-final loss to holders Killoe Emmet Óg, who must wait until Saturday evening to find out who their final opponents will be after Dromard and Clonguish drew 2-7 to 1-10 in the other semi-final.

Abbeylara's defeat, coupled with Dolan's recent decision to step away from Oisín McConville's backroom team in Wicklow, has paved the way for him to fill the void left by Mike Solan in the midlands.

“I’ll make contact with Longford. I got a call a number of weeks ago, but to be fair to Longford they understood my position," the former Roscommon sharpshooter told Shannonside Radio. 

"I wasn’t making any decision until either Abbeylara won the championship or were knocked out of the championship.

"I’m disappointed after today’s result, but I’m here now. I’m not with Wicklow. I said it previously, if the right job came and it suited, I’d have a look at it. But I will definitely make contact with Longford now that we’re out of the championship”.

He added: “It’s a local job. I came up against Longford a number of times with Wicklow. We were beaten by them in the last game of the league earlier this year.

“I’ll sit down and chat to my wife as well. I’ll definitely meet the committee and we’ll have to see what happens”.
