Lee Keegan says Galway are entitled to feel aggrieved over two late penalty calls in their All-Ireland SFC quarter-final defeat to Dublin.

While agreeing with referee David Gough’s decision to show Liam Silke a black card for a foul on Colm Basquel, Keegan didn’t think it merited a penalty which Con O’Callaghan converted. The former Mayo star was also adamant that John Maher should have been awarded a penalty at the other end after being fouled by Ciaran Kilkenny.

“For me, 100% black card,” Keegan said of the first incident on The Sunday Game.

“Is it enough to stop a goal-scoring opportunity? I think Cian Hernon is making up serious ground there. I think Basquel is still a good distance out. I just feel maybe not a penalty.”

On the Maher incident, the former Footballer of the Year added: “I think he probably has to give the penalty there if he's given another, if I'm being totally honest about it.

“Fair enough, and we think Maher might have slipped a bit, but Kilkenny's hands are around him. It looks quite high. If I'm Pádraic Joyce, I'm fuming over that decision.

“That's a massive moment in that game. If you get a penalty there, that changes the whole dynamic of the game 100%. So I can see why he's disappointed with that decision.”
