Kobe McDonald struck for 2-3 as Mayo defeated Galway by 3-16 to 1-12 in Castlebar on Wednesday evening to advance to the Connacht U20 football championship final.

Keith Higgins’s side scored four two-pointers in the opening dozen minutes before McDonald buried in his side’s first goal in the 18th minute.

Six minutes later Mayo’s teenage sensation would repeat the trick as his side moved towards a commanding 2-10 to 0-4 half-time lead.

Galway sent over the first three scores of the restart via Matthew Collins, Mikey Mulryan (free) and Ciaran Mulhern (free), but McDonald registered another point and Oisin Deane hit a brace ahead of Dylan Flynn’s goal well and truly settling the contest.

Mulryan for 1-4 back for the visitors, including a pair of two-pointers, but they’d slip to their first defeat of the competition, which means they must face Roscommon in a semi-final next weekend after the Rossies edged out Leitrim at Dr Hyde Park.

First-half goals from John Curran (2) and John McGuinness were key for a 3-6 to 2-7 victory for hosts, as they saw off a late push from their opponents which included a late Frankie McManus goal.
