Jamie Murphy struck for 1-10 as Meath defeated Dublin in the opening round of the Leinster U20 football championship last night.

It finished 1-22 to 1-18 in Ashbourne, where Murphy's 52nd minute goal from the penalty spot proved a huge turning point for the Royals and the same player would add a two-pointer from a free on the hour mark to seal the victory for the hosts.

In Darver, Louth recorded a 4-16 to 1-15 win over Longford with the help of goals from Adam Gillespie (2), Shane Lennon and DD Reilly, while Kildare were emphatic in their first-round win over Laois in Portlaoise where the hosts were handed a 3-18 to 0-6 defeat.

Westmeath got up and running at the first attempt with a 1-17 to 0-14 win against Offaly at Faithful Fields, where Peter Murphy netted the game’s only goal 10 minutes in.

Meanwhile, Wexford made their goals count in a 2-10 to 0-14 victory against neighbours Carlow at Netwatch Cullen Park.

The Slaneysiders were 0-8 to 0-5 in front when Rory Gilbert bagged their first major in the 25th minute and another from the same player 10 minutes into the second-half would prove crucial to a winning start for his team.
