A late goal from substitute Mark O'Brien handed Limerick a surprise 2-13 to 0-17 victory over holders Tipperary in the first round of the Munster U20HC at FBD Semple Stadium last night.

With five senior panellists in their line-up, including Darragh McCarthy who scored 0-11, Tipp were expected to get off to a winning start, but a livelier Limerick side didn't read the script and prevailed thanks to second half majors from Matthew Fitzgerald and O'Brien. Tipp's misery was compounded when captain Sam O'Farrell was sent off for a second yellow card in injury-time.

Limerick's Hugh Flanagan converted six frees in a game that was level 0-8 apiece at half-time.

Meanwhile, the Leinster U20FC gets underway this evening with holders Meath taking on Dublin, Offaly hosting Westmeath, Louth facing Longford, Laois meeting Kildare and Carlow squaring up to Wicklow. All games have 7.30pm throw-ins.
