This year’s Longford senior football championship remains shrouded in controversy with the latest twist seeing Carrickedmond successful in their appeal over the awarding of the win to Mullinalaghta to the Leinster GAA Hearings Committee.

The six-time champions were awarded the victory after the sides finished level on 2-12 apiece. St Columba’s successfully argued that Carrickedmond were mistakenly awarded a point in the first-half when their case was heard by Longford CCC last Friday night week and therefore topped the group, which meant they’d be up against Granard instead of Colmcille in the quarter-finals.

However, the result of yesterday morning’s appeal could now well see the 2024 Connolly Cup race delayed, as the Leinster GAA Hearings Committee has requested that a new hearing take place with Longford CCC on the matter.

Yesterday’s quarter-finals went ahead despite the decision in the hearing going in Carrickedmond’s favour, with Killoe edging out Dromard by 2-10 to 1-10 and Colmcille stunning Clonguish (1-7 to 0-8) to join the holders in the last four.

Meanwhile, Carrickedmond made the late call to pull out of last night’s relegation play-off against Longford Slashers after seeing their request to postpone the game denied by the Longford CCC.

In today’s quarter-finals, Mullinalaghta are set to face St Mary’s Granard at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park at 3.30pm before Rathcline take on Abbeylara (5.15pm).
