The SDLP has questioned Justin McNulty’s ability to combine being a MLA with managing the Laois senior footballers.

Eyebrows were raised last month when the 2002 All-Ireland Armagh winning full back returned to the O’Moore County hotseat after a 10-year absence, despite serving as an MLA for Newry and Armagh. In a statement, the SDLP said being an Assembly member is “obviously a full-time position”.

“The SDLP leadership met with Justin McNulty to congratulate him on his appointment as the manager of the Laois men’s senior team and to discuss the impact on his position as an MLA,” the party said.

“The SDLP has been clear that the role of an MLA is obviously a full-time position - and even more so when the Assembly is sitting, legislation is being considered and politicians will be required to be available for late night sittings to deal with the multiple crises facing public services.

“This is the unanimous view of the SDLP Parliamentary Group.”
