Former Kilkenny hurling star Liam ‘Chunky’ O’Brien has passed away.
O’Brien won All-Ireland SHC titles in 1972, 1974, 1975 and 1979, as well as seven Leinster crowns, and will go down as one of the greatest to ever play with his native Kilkenny.
Often described as a ‘midfield maestro’, playing alongside Frank Cummins, the James Stephens clubman earned All-Star awards on four different occasions and was named as the Texaco Player of the Year in 1975.
In what was a glittering playing career, ‘Chunky’ also won four Kilkenny senior hurling crowns with James Stephens with whom he also won Leinster and All-Ireland club titles on two seperate occasions.
He passed away peacefully in the care of the staff at St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny and will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
