Kilkenny changes baffle Canning

Joe Canning has questioned why Eoin Murphy is no longer Kilkenny’s No. 1.

Aidan Tallis was given the nod between the posts in last Saturday’s heavy Leinster SHC Round 1 defeat to Galway, and Canning felt Murphy’s experience – along with that of Huw Lawlor and Richie Reid – was badly missed.

"It's not that Aidan Tallis, Mikey Carey and Darragh Corcoran are doing anything wrong. But you're taking out Eoin Murphy - yes, Huw Lawlor's away, can't do anything about that - and Richie Reid, who have huge experience,” the Galway great told Second Captains.

“You're taking three hugely experienced players out of the spine of the team and replacing them with... Aidan Tallis is new, a great goalie, don't get me wrong, it's nothing against him; but just the experience of it. Mikey Carey, who's not used to playing full back, and then Darragh Corcoran, who plays wing back for his club and Richie Reid plays centre-back for his club.

“So, you're wondering why this is, why the changes?”

Canning added: “Eoin Murphy would be on every other team in the country as a goalie, in my opinion. Maybe Limerick might keep Nickie Quaid in goals. But he's been the top goalie in the country, himself and Nickie Quaid, for the last 10 years or whatever.”
