Joe Murphy has been appointed as interim Carlow football manager following Shane Curran's surprise relegation last week.

The former Éire Óg and Carlow player takes the reins just six days before the Barrowsiders' travel to Páirc Tailteann to take on Meath in the first round of the Leinster SFC. Former Roscommon goalkeeper Curran had been in charge for just seven games.

Since hanging up his boots, Murphy has enjoyed a hugely successful managerial career at club level. He won two Carlow SFC titles with Old Leighlin and a four-in-a-row with his home club Éire Óg between 2017 and 2020 before guiding Naas to the last three Kildare SFC titles. His new role means he won't be continuing as Naas boss.

In a statement released by Carlow GAA, team captain Mikey Bambrick 'welcomed the appointment and said that the players were looking forward to working with Murphy over the coming months’.
