Galway fans fly their flag.

Former Galway hurler Andy Fenton has passed away following a battle with illness, prompting tributes from across the GAA community.

Fenton was a member of Galway’s All-Ireland U21 winning side in 1972 before going on to feature at senior level. He started at corner-back in the 1979 All-Ireland SHC final against Kilkenny.

A hugely respected figure with Kiltormer, Fenton played a key role in the club’s back-to-back Galway senior hurling championship successes in 1976 and 1977. He won three Galway and one Connacht club titles during his career.

A post from Galway county board this morning read: "Galway GAA are saddened to learn of the passing of Kiltormer GAA club man Andy Fenton.

"Andy was a key member of the Galway U-21 side which won the county’s first ever underage All-Ireland title in 1972 and the Kiltormer clubman went on to play for the senior side throughout the decade.

"He also made a significant contribution to his club Kiltormer on and off the field of play; starring when they won the Galway Intermediate title in 1975 followed by Senior club championship titles in 1976 and 1977.

"We extend our condolences to his wife Anne, his children Deirdre, Cathal, Aoife and Enda, grandchildren, extended family members and the Kiltormer GAA community."

Fenton will repose at Kiltormer Complex today (Friday from) 4pm to 7pm.

Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday at St Patrick’s Church, Kiltormer, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
