Sligo were in dominant form as they killed off New York’s Connacht senior football championship dreams with a 2-16 to 0-6 victory at a wet Markievicz Park this afternoon.

Paddy O’Connor bagged both goals for the Division 4 champions, with the latter strike all but wrapping up their win and progression through to a provincial final date against either Roscommon or Galway in two weeks’ time.

Playing in their first Connacht semi-final after a historic win over Leitrim a fortnight ago, New York were rocked after just four minutes in this one after O’Connor smashed to their net.

Former Galway forward Adrian Varley would get the visitors off the mark after 12 minutes but they’d only manage two more points for the rest of the half in the scrappy conditions, as the Yeats men went in at the break leading 1-7 to 0-3.

Pat Spillane got the scoreboard moving again for Tony McEntee’s men early in the restart and they’d kill off the contest in the 44th minute when O’Connor palmed home their second goal.

Substitute Conall Ahearne and Bill Maher sent over consolation points for the Exiles as they’d finish the game with 13 men following a black card for Robert Wharton and straight red for sub Niall Madine in the closing stages.

Johnny McGeeney’s men now get set for the Tailteann Cup, while Sligo will aim to tear up the script against one of the province’s ‘big guns’ in Castlebar on May 7th.
