New Donegal manager Paddy Carr says he respects Michael Murphy’s decision to retire from inter-county football.

Murphy announced last month that he had played his last game with the Tir Chonaill County after a stellar career, winning an All-Ireland SFC title in 2012, five Ulster crowns and three All-Star awards.

Speaking to BBC Sport NI, Carr said that while he would’ve liked to have seen the Glenswilly man go on, they respect his decision and all he’s done for Donegal football.

"I think the people of Donegal would have thought that Michael Murphy would go on for another 100 years. That's the respect and esteem they hold Michael in," stated Carr.

"It's the nature of life and the demands that are made on young and successful Gaelic footballers are very high.

"There are other stages and other good things happening in their lives as well.

"He has made it for his own personal and private reasons. We respect that and it just means that there will be a real interest in seeing what the Donegal football team looks like in the post-Michael Murphy era."
