University of Limerick were in ruthless form last night as they defeated neighbours TUS Midwest with 31 points to spare in round one of the Fitzgibbon Cup.
It finished 5-30 to 0-14 at Maguires Fields, where Clare ace Mark Rodgers fired a hat-trick for the hosts while Tipperary’s Gearoid O’Connor and Sean Twomey of Cork also hit the net.
The six-time champions hammered in all of their goals during the first-half to take in an unassailable 5-14 to 0-5 lead at the break.
Billy Seymour smashed over a penalty for TUS in the second-half, while Robin Mounsey contributed three points in the losing effort.
Earlier in the day, GMIT also cruised to victory by seeing off Trinity College on a 3-26 to 1-08 score-line.
