Former Tyrone star Owen Mulligan is predicting Derry will overcome Galway this weekend and advance to their first All-Ireland SFC final in 29 years.

The Oak Leafers captured a first Ulster title since 1998 by edging out Donegal after extra time at the end of May and a comfortable win over Clare two weeks ago has brought them back to the last four stage in the race for Sam Maguire.

Speaking to PaddyPower, Mulligan made his prediction for Saturday’s showdown at Croke Park (throw-in 5.30pm) and says he expects Rory Gallagher’s men to hold firm at the back and see out the victory.

"Who will win? As much as it pains me to admit it, I think the hunger and defensive system of the Derrymen will see them grind out the victory,” said the three-time All-Ireland winner.

"It won’t be pretty but Derry will suffocate Galway’s quality inside forward and will quickly break on the counter.

"The Tribesmen will need to be patient and take the correct option while in possession. They will need to be accurate from longer range and hope the wizardry of Walsh can break down a stubborn defence.

"I just have a nagging feeling that Galway will concede silly goals and Gallagher will be shrewder than Joyce on the sideline."
