As fuel prices continue to go through the roof, spare a thought for the intermediate footballers of Castletownbere who had to travel 175km to Mitchelstown or ‘halfway to Dublin’ for their first league match of the year on Sunday.
That’s a journey of 2 hours and 19 minutes if travelling through the M8 toll in Fermoy or 2 hours 43 minutes if taking the scenic route via Kenmare, Rathmore and Mallow. And then there’s the same journey back to West Cork.
As for the game itself, Castletownbere showed no ill-effects from the long journey by racing into an early 0-5 to 0-1 lead, only to be overtaken down the home straight by a Mitchelstown team who ran out 3-8 to 0-9 winners.
