GAA Speeches - 9 Like(s)

Replying To Galway9801:  "Ahh I'd like to thank,, aah I'd like to thank,, aah I'd like to thank Boring, uninspiring, waffle"
Should have said 'People of Limerick we love you' I suppose? Maybe if you were part of the back room team sitting at home today you would appreciate what the speech meant. Turn it off if you have issues.

Does Anybody Give A S**T About Hurling Classic? - 6 Like(s)

Replying To Bon:  "I've enjoyed watching it the past couple of years, disappointed it hasn't been televised this year."
Think TG4 got it right this weekend. Instead of showing us a hybrid game in the states between the top counites in hurling we got to see 2 club teams from second tier hurling counties in Carlow and Loais play as good a game of club hurling Ive seen. Now thats promotion!

Replying To Viking66:  "Minimal contact like pulling a fellas arm or shirt shouldn't be a foul at all. Problem solved."
Get real. Talk about an Irish soloution to a problem. At what point does it become a foul to pull a players jersey. When his shirt comes off his back? Ridiculous talk,

Hurling Referees Destroying Hurling - 6 Like(s)
Its not fair to the ref to call it the worst performance ever as Babs did. The ref was very sharp and consistent in calling technical fouls most of which were arms around the shoulder, high tackles and throws. Nothing sinister but fouls none the less. Babs doesnt describe one single example of a foul that should not have been blown as a free. Instead he just tells us that there was too many frees. What are mickey mouse things? Are they not in the rule book?

Hurling: Kerry 0-17 Tipperary 0-14 - 5 Like(s)

Replying To BlueBeret:  "That is an absolutely absurd comment. Kerry hurlers will never be admitted to the top table of Munster hurling. Snobbery will continue to ensure this. Kerry will have to progress through the Rest of Ireland (aka Leinster) championship and win the All Ireland championship before they could even be considered worthy of being discussed for inclusion in Munster."
What a load of ill informed rubbish. Kerry left the Munster Championship themselves and everyone would love to see them back. Yes they will need to win Joe Mc to do that but they were never pushed out.

Replying To royaldunne:  "Best wishes to Andy Brian Donal and all the team today. Safe journey to all fans from both counties traveling to game. I like Clare , and I love their football people, they are very dedicated to the game in the face of hurling snobbery, so absolutely thrilled that they reached this far, obviously I hope they go no further this year. But still I have huge admiration for them. Hon the royal"
We like both games in Clare royal, unlike you.

The 3 in a row was tarnished by those Sunday game panelists talking about splitting Dublin tonight. Terrible stuff.

Replying To Cuckoosinging:  "looks amateurish? Excuse me but hurling is the sport where lads just drive the ball up into the air and hope for the best. Very rarely you actually see a good pass in hurling just lad been chased down coming out of defense and he hoofs it long a big roar from the crowd as two lads run after it absolutely no skill level. And its been a while since i seen 16points between the sides in any football match. Pathetic stuff"
Is that you again Cuckoo. Just reminding you again that you were beaten last year by a hurling team in the footabll c'ship. Go way out of that with your auld bladder. You wouldn't know one end of a hurley from the other and I doubt you know much about football either.

Replying To brisbane:  "Watching Galway v Wexford and all i could think of was PUKE HURLING. Galway was always a attractive team to watch until they started playing in the Leinster championship i think they began to copy Kilkennys physical structured type of play similar to a football team."
I never remember Kilkenny playing as you call it Puke Hurling,. They played total hurling from my memory. Time maybe for Galway to take a look at themselves rather than blaming others.

How can you blame Dublin? Fact is Meath had all the chances today yet didnt take them. This game was more about how bad Meath were instead of how good Dublin were. Dublin only got going in the last quarter when Meath were drained.

Hurling Referees Destroying Hurling - 3 Like(s)

Replying To lochgarmanabu:  "On Sunday night Rte showed about 4 perfectly legal handpasses that the referee blew during the Dublin/Wexford match. Except for very late in the game he hardly allowed any advantage to be played. Perhaps his whistle was telling him it had had enough."
I agree with you on the advantage, he certainly didnt use it. But the ref doesn't have the luxury of an rte camera to zoom in on a handpass to tell whether there was space between the hand and the ball. But it wasnt either of these that seemed blatant frees to me. It was the over use of the spare hand around the shoulder and neck, yet for every free that was awarded and point scored the players kept fouling over and over again. Surely theres a message in this for the players too?

Lack Of Jeopardy In Division 1 Hurling - 3 Like(s)
As others said the gap between division 2 and division 1 is too large and cant be compared to football in that respect. I was a fan of the old league format and wasn't sure why they changed it but now I can see that it can only do good for Westmeath Antrim and Laois to compete with top teams every week. Eventually the hidings will pay off. If your old enough you will remember Clare, Waterford , Galway and Dublin got multiple hidings over the decades before they established themselves at the top. What we need are more teams at the top and I cant see any other way of expediting it. Forget cracking league matches, thats what the championship is for.

Hurling Gets All The Plaudits But Is It Played Within The Rules? - 3 Like(s)
"when you pare it back and take away the crazy tackling (UFC with sticks) the overzealous and often embarrassing punditry of the likes of tommy walsh, micheal duighan and john mullane it's not what it's made out to be. " When you pare back any game with the level of cynicism youve afforded hurling then all sports are not what they are made out to be. Ridiculous post.

Penalise Hurling's Sliotar Throw ! - 3 Like(s)

Replying To Cu_culainn:  "Good post. Not sure who here is still playing the game but as someone still playing up north in a lesser county we simply do not get away with an illegal handpass. Gets blown every time. My opinion is that referrees at the top of game let the throw go to keep the speed of the game up and as this poster alluded to it is the only realistic way of getting a ball out of the tackle, inevitably there should be an overlap to your favour of you get bottled up by 2-3 defenders on the other side. Another reason for an increase number of passes being thrown is the intensity of the tackle, arms getting tugged thumped etc, 2-3 players hitting you in the tackle now trying to perform a legal handpass would probably result in more turn overs. That extra split second of showing clear space between ball and strike allows these top players the chance to come in and disrupt the ball and create turnovers. Good topic, annoys me seeing the ball thrown at times however I usually willing to look past it if a player comes booming off a shoulder to take the ball at pace."
The increased number of handpasses and the increase number of spare hand fouls like pulling and dragging players are all part of the same problem. Back in the old days you got an opportunity to block or hook a player in possession of the ball. Most players tacked with both hands on the hurl. Now, the default is one hand outstretched to try and stop the players impending handpass so we get loads of handpasses, loads of simple silly frees, and lots of easy scores. Its all become a handpass and hand blocking frenzy in the middle of the field.

Dublin's Success Not Down To Money - GAA President - 3 Like(s)
Interesting to hear Cheddar Plunket speaking recently about funding in Dublin hurling. He reckons the funds originally earmarked for hurling in Dublin in the early noughties was eventually 'hijacked' by the football development in Dublin. I sure would like to hear him expand on this. Was it just coincidence that it was the footballers that flourished after so much money was thrown at hurling in the capital?
