Castletown-Geoghegan retained the Westmeath senior hurling championship title by seeing off Lough Lene Gaels on a 3-15 to 2-9 scoreline at a rain-soaked TEG Cusack Park this afternoon.
Shane Clavin, Liam Varley and David O'Reilly struck the holders’ goals as they recorded their club’s 17th county SHC success to join Clonkill at the top of the roll of honour list in the Lake County.
Clavin’s goal inside the opening minute gave Castletown the dream start in this decider replay in Mullingar and they’d move into a five-point lead before conceding a penalty that saw Tommy Doyle fouled in the square and David Williams converting the puck to the net.
Runners up the past three seasons, Lough Lene Gaels narrowed their deficit down to one afterwards but frees from Niall O’Brien ensured that Castletown would go in with a 1-8 to 1-5 advantage at the break.
O’Brien sent over another free after the change of ends and a goal from Varley in the 38th minute pushed the margin between the teams out to seven points.
Williams got a point back for LLG, but they’d be left with a mountain to climb after substitute Jack Gallagher’s point for the victors was backed up by an O’Reilly goal in the 52nd minute.
The Gaels did respond with their second goal of the game a minute later before more points from O’Brien and Gallagher rounded off the nine-point victory for Castletown, securing their third Westmeath Examiner Cup success in four years.
