Amid horrendous weather conditions, the Leinster U20FC got underway last night.

Westmeath, Laois, Meath and Dublin all opened with victories, while Offaly salvaged a last-gasp draw against Louth.

Despite setting the early pace, holders Kildare were eventually overtaken by Westmeath who came away from Hawkfield with a 2-10 to 0-10 victory thanks to second half goals from Brían Cooney and Matthew Whittaker. The visitors' win was all the more noteworthy after they had played almost 20 minutes with 14 men after both of their midfielders, Dylan Murtagh and Ben Killian, received black cards.

In Baltinglass, Dublin withstood a late Wicklow rally to win by 1-14 to 3-6.

The visitors led by 1-6 to 0-4 at the interval after Dan O'Leary found the net, but Wicklow second half goals from Sean Doyle, James Boland, and Jack Kirwan left Dublin hanging on.

Eoghan Frayne and Oisín Keogh scored 0-9 between them as Meath - who were Leinster minor champions three years ago - comfortably accounted for Longford by 0-12 to 0-4 in Clonguish.

Davy Costello's early goal proved crucial in Laois' 1-12 to 1-10 victory over neighbours Carlow at Netwatch Cullen Park, while a John Furlong goal with the last kick of the game earned Offaly a 2-4 to 0-10 draw with Louth in Stabannon Parnells.
