Brian Gavin believes the decision to postpone fixtures where pitches are unplayable due to adverse weather conditions shouldn't be left to referees who have long distances to travel.

The four-time All-Ireland SHC final referee was one of many Offaly supporters who were en route to Salthill for yesterday's Allianz Football League game against Galway when they found out that the game had been postponed. It was due to be refereed by Sean Lonergan, who had travelled from South Tipperary.

Offaly GAA tweeted that it had only learned of the postponement at 11.40am, just over two hours before the scheduled throw-in time.

It was one of four Allianz Football League fixtures which fell victim to Storm Franklin yesterday.
