New Additions To The Cavan Panel

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Just was thinking of what players may make an impact in Cavan games that have impressed this c'ship

•James Brady -deserves a chance for the roasting he gave young fortune in crosskeys the first day,and ramors best forward all year

•Niall McDermott-obviously he's only starting to get going properly for ballinagh after long time away but still as accurate of a ff you'll find in Cavan

•Shane Tierney(Lavey)-In my opinion the most consistent forward in the Cavan c'ship for the last 4 years.Great speed and ball winning ability two good feet aswell would be a good addition

•Cormac Timoney (Ballinagh) very impressed with the young lad from ballinagh, playing at 6 at 20,21 years of age is no easy task. His strong runs and blistering pace up the middle is something Cavan lack ,Ciaran "holla" esque and I feel 6 is a huge problem from Cavan as nobody who actually plays 6 regularly

•Barry Reilly-I'm well aware this man is a very busy dairy farmer but my god the exhibition of free taking he always puts on.That left foot is as good you'll find in the county.

•Luke Gilsenan- This man was scoring 1-4,1-6,0-7 in an average Bailieborough team imagine with a bit of proper service he'd be capable of

•Caoimhan McGovern(Shannon gaels) As the great Sir Matt Busby once said "if ur good enough ur old enough" I've been watching this lad play for the last 3 years closely and I honestly feel this kid is special.Yes he's 18 yes he's playing in junior but this lad is a generational talent.2 wonderful feet, free taking off the ground or out of the hands, speed, size and temperament the lad has it all.Id love to see for once Cavan embrace a great young talent into the senior panel.Theres no subsition for natural scoring ability either u have it or u don't

Any more????

There are some excellent forwards left in the Junior like Thomas Edward Donohoe Denn Philip Rogers Knockbride Liam Galligan and Eoin McCaffrey Templeport as well as Caoimhin McGovern. Indeed the Junior Championship could come down to which of these perform best over the next 2 weeks.

Well folks hope everyone's doing ok.I was just thinking after the weekend of football that it's amazing to think the county football will be in full swing in 2 1/2 weeks. So to take the mid away from Covid for awhile I'm gonna list my starting XV and our strongest lineup
1Galligan
2McLoughlin
3Faulkner
4Meade (purely based off the few league games he's played)(hard enough w no moynagh) gunner is too fiery and always seems to get booked
5G.Smith
6Ciaran Brady (definitely not disciplined enough(defensively I mean) for 6 but no one better at the moment)
7Kiernan
8Smith(that county final performance was magnificent)
9T.Galligan(although hasn't played a whole pile of football with Lacken this year)
10Reilly
11Gmac
12N.Murray
13O'Reilly
14McDermott(if he's involved)
15Lynch

Gk-fairly solid can have wobbles from time to time but v experienced
Defense-2,3,5 are all dead certs I'll debate 4,6,7 personnel wise
Midfield-I think we are lacking another natural midfielder to play alongside James Smith.Gmac is too in and out of games too often
Forwards-10,11,12,13 all dead certs once again all very reliable for club and county.McDermott the question is A.is he part of the panel and B.will they give him a starting role.Paddy Lynch and Pierson was a coin toss Lynch just edged it purely off the variety of scores he can get.
I could very easily see a full forward line of O'Reilly,Magee,Pierson just as likely as the above mentioned

Sidenote:I would like for Cavan to experiment at 6 to find long term answer Hope young timoney gets a go most natural 6 in all of cavan

I think you have to include Benjamin Kelly from Templeport at no 6.

I think if you were to look at things on a pound for pound basis and pick the best player in the county in each position rather than just trying to accomodate players out of positions they are not comfortable in, the below would be Cavan's best team:

1 James Farrelly
2 Padraig Faulkner
3 Padraig Faulkner
4 Padraig Faulkner
5 Padraig Faulkner
6 Padraig Faulkner
7 Gerry Smith
8 Padraig Faulkner
9 James Smith
10 Padraig Faulkner
11 Martin Reilly or Padraig Faulkner
12 Padraig Faulkner/Gearoid McKiernan/Cormac O' Reilly
13 Niall McDermott
14 Padraig Faulkner
15 Shane Tierney

If we did have 10 Padraig Faulkners on the field, you might finally get that goal you've been on about since 2014.

I seriously think we need to move Faulkner to midfield with James Smith. They'd run a Darren Hughes and a Niall kearns all over clones
Fullback-give Patrick o Reilly a chance done v well on Barry Reilly.When/if killian comes back that would probably be his best spot.6 I still think is a huge problem had to many people need to settle on one

Serious question:With all the good forwards tierneys,Lynch's,Pierson's,McDermotts,James Brady's do people think gmac should still get in ahead.I personally feel people only put mckiernan in there because of the reputation not form

He was outstanding in the last two championship games against Ramor and Kingscourt , that is form or what is your own interpretation of form?

I could be wrong, but I believe form is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era.

McKiernan was ineffective for a full half in his last game of club football by an out of position full back who retired from County football about 4 years ago because of his age.

Good against Ramor though.
